The history of Jaeger-LeCoultre
Founded in 1833, Jaeger-LeCoultre has been acknowledged since the 19th century as the “Grande Maison” of the Vallée de Joux. With over 200 patents and more than 1,000 different calibres developed and crafted under one roof, several icon models such as the Reveros, the Duoplan or the Atmos, it is one of the most important and most innovative players in watchmaking history.
1833 A pioneer in the field of precision and a brilliant inventor, Antoine LeCoultre (1803-1881) founded his workshop in the Vallée de Joux, the paradise of Grandes Complications.
1844 Invention of the world's most accurate instrument: the Millionometer makes it possible to measure the micron.
1847 Invention of the keyless winding mechanism: the first reliable system eliminating the need for keys either to wind or set a watch.
1907 Calibre 145 : the world's thinnest mechanical movement.
1928 Invention of the Atmos clock: virtually perpetual winding.
1929 Calibre 101 : the world's smallest mechanical movement.
1931 Creation of the Reverso: its unique swivel was to transform this great Art Deco classic into a living legend.
1956 Memovox : the first automatic alarm watch.
1958 Geophysic : chronometer with double anti-magnetic case.
1992 Creation of the 1000 Hours control: a series of tests that gave rise to a new benchmark in horological reliability.
2004 A world first: the Gyrotourbillon 1 spherical tourbillon heralds a new chapter in the history of Grande Complication watches.
2006 With its 6 patents, the Reverso grande complication à triptyque is the first Reverso to offer three watch faces.
2009 The Master Tourbillon and the Reverso Gyrotourbillon win the first and the second Prize at the Concours international de Chronométrie.
For the future : More than ever, Jaeger-LeCoultre is brimming with ideas for rising to new technical challenges and creating miniature watchmaking wonders.
