Watch-Glass Maker
The watch-glass maker has excellent manual dexterity that enables him/her to design and produce watch glasses that protect the hands, dial and occasionally the oscillating weight of a timepiece. Self-taught, the watch-glass maker is sometimes required to manufacture certain watch glasses as unique, one-off pieces. The watch-glass maker begins by cutting and shaping the glass until the required shape is obtained. He/she then polishes the piece carefully to highlight its shine and transparency. In order to carry out his/her tasks successfully, the watch-glass maker must have exceptional manual dexterity, excellent eyesight and a natural ability to conceive of volume and proportions in relation to space. A self-taught craftsman with basic knowledge of mechanics, the watch-glass maker is called upon to create complicated pieces that can sometimes require up to 25 different operations.
