Movement designer

(in French: Concepteur de mouvement)

The movement designer develops new calibres according to specifications and industrialisation requirements. Imaginative, flexible, creative, communicative and gifted with good analytical capabilities, he/she invents an aesthetic way of assembling the functions of a watch. This professional is well acquainted with computer-aided design (CAD) and he/she monitors the creation of the new product from its preliminary design to the creation of its prototype. With an education in basic engineering, the movement designer is extremely familiar with the world of watchmaking.

  • Designer-developer CFC (Swiss Federal Certificate of Capacity) in the field of microtechnics - see technical schools
  • Designer-developer in microtechnics, or watchmaker CFC (see watchmaker”), or
  • micromechanic CFC (see micromechanic), and additional training as a technician in watchmaking assembly (ES), 3 to 5 years on the job – see CIFOM: Centre Interrégional de Formation des Montagnes Neuchâteloises (Inter-regional Training Centre for the Neuchâtel Mountains area), under technical and watchmaking schools.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (see engineer), 3 years, and master of advanced studies in watchmaking design degree, 2 years – see Haute Ecole ARC Ingénierie (a Swiss engineering school) in engineering schools (ARC watchmaking).
