Bagnolet (calibre)

Ultra-thin watch with eccentric dial. Circa 1850

The extra-flat watch movement known as a Bagnolet is an "inverted" calibre, where the dial is on the geartrain side rather than the bottom plate side.
So that the time can be read correctly, the gears therefore turn the opposite way. The flattest Bagnolet calibres do not exceed a millimetre and a half in height.
