Engine-turner

The word “engine-turning” signifies “mechanised decoration”. A unique type of craftsman, the engine-turner decorates pieces using a lathe equipped with chisels that is operated entirely by hand. The chisels enable him/her to cut into the metal according to a predetermined template. The skill of the engine-turner is conveyed by the way he/she adjusts the machine, in their selection of tools and in their execution of the operation. This profession is almost exclusively taught through practical lessons.
