A gemmologist determines the origin and authenticity of precious stones (diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires) and gemstones, and establishes their market value.

The gemmologist appraises the surface, colour, hardness and density of stones to determine whether it is a natural gem, a synthetic stone, or an imitation. He/she draws up an authenticity certificate for the stone and, for diamonds, a grading report based on the 4Cs of colour, clarity, cut and carat. For pearls, a quality certificate specifies size, shape, purity and the characteristics of the layers of nacre.
