A regatta watch features a countdown function to show the final few minutes leading up to the start of a boat race.
This enables competitors to position their boat as near to the starting line as possible without crossing it and accumulating penalties.
The countdown is shown in different-coloured sections or by means of hands on subdials. Most regatta watches count down from ten minutes before start time. Some include a supplementary system that counts the final minute, second by second, to the starting signal.
