L.U.C XP Esprit de Fleurier Peony

Chopard 2018

ref. 131944-5003
Women's

Since 2015, the L.U.C Esprit de Fleurier line has revived the ancient – and dying – art of Fleurisanne engraving. Popular in the nineteenth century in the Val-de-Travers area of Switzerland, where Chopard has its Manufacture, this hand-engraving technique works around the contours of the pattern to create a raised design on the movement. The surface around the pattern is then stippled, dot by dot, to produce a finely grained appearance. Once the engraving is complete, the gold bridges are rhodium-plated to obtain a two-colour movement. As its name suggests, the L.U.C Esprit de Fleurier Peony is embellished with peony leaves and flowers – a bloom many cultures associate with beauty and success. As well as the engraving on the movement, the peony can be admired on the dial, this time as a stunning example of another rare craft. Originating in Asia, this intricate paper-cutting technique developed in Switzerland, in Pays-d'Enhaut, which is part of the Canton of Vaud, as Scherenschnitt. This stylised peony in black paper stands out against the white of the Grand Feu enamel dial.
