Ronde Louis Cartier XL Flamed Gold

Cartier 2017

Women's

Ronde Louis Cartier XL or flammé square

Cartier has established a tradition of presenting,

each year, an artistic craft or métier d'art which has either fallen out of use

or is unknown in watchmaking. After Etruscan granulation, enamel granulation,

gold filigree and scrimshaw engraving, flamed gold now comes to the fore.

Inspired by the traditional technique of heating hour and minute hands over a

flame, flamed gold requires absolute control of temperature, as each colour

appears at a precise moment; blue requires the highest temperature and beige

the lowest. The 18k gold dial is engraved or "brushed' to reproduce the

texture of fur. This surface is then heated by a flame in successive stages to bring

out the individual shades, stopping only when the palette is complete.
