After setting precious stones in ceramic and Carbon TPT®, Richard Mille takes preciousness to a higher level and adds diamonds to a case in blue sapphire – a material so notoriously difficult to machine this would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. The RM 07-02 Gemset Sapphire proves that with determination - and the right technical expertise - nothing is impossible. When setting gems in sapphire, the holes that will accommodate the stones must be laser-sculpted with a tolerance of one micrometre. As for the gold prongs that will secure the diamonds in the mount, they are made separately then hand-polished. Such extraordinary precision justifies the forty days each case takes to complete. These sparkling diamonds magnificently frame an elegant mother-of-pearl dial. On the reverse side, the transparency of the sapphire draws attention to the automatic skeleton movement in microblasted white gold. As a final flourish, the oscillating weight is also highlighted with diamonds.
