The engraver apprentice/student trains in the workplace with additional studies at a vocational college, or as a full-time student at a vocational college. Drawing and model-making are the foundations of engraving, and students are given a solid background in art. They are also taught essential notions of machine-work so they can use a milling machine and lathe, as well as new technologies and basic IT. The École d'Arts Appliqués in La Chaux-de-Fonds proposes courses with applications in watchmaking (decoration of dials and case backs, movement decoration, skeleton watches, etc.)
