Hold a Swiss high-school maturité certificate, or a Swiss HES bachelor’s degree. Holders of a federal vocational baccalaureate aged 25 or over should apply to the CMS preparatory course.
The Materials Science and Engineering Section at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) provides multi-disciplinary teaching that draws on the sciences of physics and chemistry alongside traditional engineering disciplines such as manufacturing and applications.
The preparatory and first year of the Bachelor's programme are designed to give students a broad foundation in materials science: structure and properties of materials, underlying principles in their different transformations, and techniques to resolve problems relating to the design and engineering of materials.
In their final year, Bachelor's students complete two research projects, working directly with a research laboratory in materials. Students in the Master's programme acquire a more in-depth understanding of materials structure from macroscale to atomic scale. This will enable them to use materials' properties and manufacturing processes to create new and innovative products that can be applied in areas such as microtechnologies, biotechnologies, aerospace, transport, infrastructure, sport, and many others. Students who graduate with a Master's in Materials Science and Engineering go on to careers in a wide variety of industries, including the watch industry.
