An engine turner decorates the surface of a watch dial, bridge or mainplate with a repetitive pattern of regular geometric motifs, using either a hand tool or a rose engine. Examples of engine-turned (or guilloché) patterns are sunray, Côtes de Genève and snailing. A specialist in circular-graining decorates a bridge or mainplate with overlapping circular patterns, called œil-de-perdrix, using the flat end of a pegwood in a rotating motion.
