The Quirky Backstory Of The Piaget Black Tie Vintage Inspiration
Piaget is well recognized for its extensive expertise and creativity when it comes to gold cases and stunning stone dials.
This collection draws its inspiration from several original Piaget creations that date back to the 1970s, a golden era for bold design and artistic expression.
The first iterations of this case design appeared around 1972. At that time, Piaget identified its models by reference numbers rather than collection names.
Among these, we can think of the references 15101, 15102, and 14101. The key characteristic of these watches was the step-case construction, which gave them a distinctive aesthetic.
This stepped design not only enhanced the geometry of the watch but also played beautifully with light, creating reflections that brought out the unique details of the case.
Crafted entirely from 18k gold, these stepped cases were — and still are — incredibly challenging to produce and polish due to their complex structure.
Originally, these watches were powered by the revolutionary Beta 21 movement, known for being the first commercialized Swiss quartz caliber. The modern reissue, however, is equipped with Piaget’s in-house automatic caliber 534P.
They were — and continue to be — offered with a wide variety of mesmerizing stone dials, including tiger’s eye, lapis lazuli, brown pietersite, green jade nephrite, malachite, onyx, and even meteorite.
