Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8
In 1968 Apollo 8 became the first manned flight to orbit the Moon. Each member of the crew wore an Omega Speedmaster. In honour of this historic moment, and following the 2018 release for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission, Omega presents a new Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon. Calibre 3869 features a laser-ablated Moon relief decoration on its main plate and bridges. Thus one side of this manual-winding movement depicts the Moon as we see it from Earth and the other shows the "dark side" witnessed only by astronauts – all in nuances of black and grey to complement the surface treatment for the movement components. This attention to detail can be enjoyed in all its splendour at the centre of the anodized aluminium circle that forms the dial, finished with luminescent indices, and through the sapphire back of the 44.25mm ceramic case. As a final flourish, small seconds at 9 o'clock are pointed by a laser-turned hand in the shape of the Saturn V rocket. Engraved on the case back are Jim Lovell's famous words, "WE'LL SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE", spoken just as Apollo 8 lost radio contact with ground control, as the module passed behind the dark side of the Moon.
