Ceramic in watchmaking

Ceramic is a material known by many and used in a lot of various fields. However, it was implemented in watches rather late in the 20th century.

The particularity of ceramic in watchmaking is its exceptional scratch resistance, lightweight nature, hypoallergenic properties, and vibrant color permanence.

It offers durability, comfort, and a sleek, modern aesthetic to timepieces, making ceramic highly desirable in the industry.

We believe it all started in the early 1980s with Omega experimenting with this material on a watch, the Omega Seamaster “Tullipe”. These watches were produced in small amounts and originally cost five times the price of a regular Speedmaster! The Ceramic were here fixed on top of a steel base.

Then followed the incredible work of @iwcwatches on this material who believed early in the added value of using it. We can think of the revolutionary IWC Da Vinci proposed in white or black ceramic.

Rado helped democratizing this material in the late 1980’s with various types of watches proposing their case but also bracelet and black shiny ceramic.

We cannot forget the @chanel J12 that finished imposing ceramic in watchmaking in the early 2000s. Ceramic is now here to stay.
