The Quirky Backstory Of Gucci Timepieces

Gucci is Florentine at heart, but its watches have always had a Swiss pulse. When the quartz era turned wristwatches into everyday accessories, Gucci didn’t try to out-compete tool watches on specs.

Instead, it did what the House does best: turning hardware into a signature.

Look closely at these pieces and you’ll see the design logic of a leather goods atelier.

A chain becomes a bracelet (and the case becomes a link).

A buckle feels like it could have been lifted from a belt.

Even the dials lean into material and mood: tortoiseshell tones, mother-of-pearl shimmer, deep lacquered colours that read more like fashion swatches than “watchmaking codes”.

And then there’s the 80s/90s sweet spot, where Gucci gets wonderfully experimental.

Watches that flirt with being jewellery first.

A wooden bangle that looks like it belongs on a coffee table in Milan, yet still whispers SWISS MADE. Sportier two-tone pieces staged on ice like they’re ready for a Riviera summer, because yes, the ad campaign is part of the product.

Fun fact: the man who helped build the Gucci watch business for decades, Severin Wunderman, would later go on to buy Corum. Not a bad trajectory for someone who proved that, sometimes, the cleverest way to sell time… is to sell style.
