Early 21st century, Chanel unveiled a new kind of watch — a model rather unusual for a renowned high fashion brand: the J12.


 

In 2000, famous designer Jacques Helleu, inspired by J Class sailing yachts, imagined the J12 as a truly disruptive Chanel product. But why disruptive?


 

For the brand, it was a first on many levels — a sport/diving watch, entirely made from ceramic, gender-neutral in design, and powered by an automatic movement.


 

Thanks to its high-tech ceramic construction, the J12 proved highly resistant to scratches and came in an original and bold glossy black color. In 2003, a white version was added, which became an instant success among the feminine clientele.


 

The J12 also served as Chanel’s gateway into Swiss fine watchmaking. Through this collection, the brand began to challenge established watchmakers by introducing technical complications such as a chronograph, GMT, and even a tourbillon.


 

In 2019, Chanel introduced the Caliber 12.1, its first major in-house movement, developed in partnership with Kenissi, which now powers the new generations of J12 watches. Alongside this technical evolution, Chanel also found innovative — and sometimes playful — ways of reinterpreting its icon through bold aesthetic experiments and limited editions.


 

It is now clear that the J12 was — and still is — both a creative playground and an experimental laboratory for Chanel, allowing the brand to propose daring and original timepieces in limited series.

Chanel occasionally plays with the image of Coco Chanel, the visionary behind the brand, incorporating her likeness into various limited-edition pieces.
