In 1920 Alfred Helwig, a teacher at the watchmaking school in the East German town of Glashütte, perfected a tourbillon construction that was supported on one side only, creating the impression that it was “flying”. And so the flying tourbillon was born. Glashütte Original’s Alfred Helwig Tourbillon 1920 is a tribute to one of the most brilliant German watchmakers. In what would have been expected a century ago, but unusual today, the tourbillon is not visible on the dial side, which retains a sober and perhaps typically German aesthetic. Hand-finished and crafted from silver-plated solid gold, the face of the Alfred Helwig Tourbillon 1920 presents a railroad chapter ring and applied indexes. Its flying tourbillon can be seen through the transparent caseback, as can the three-quarter plate and blued screws that are characteristic of German watchmaking. The manual-winding 54-01 calibre provides a remarkable 100 hours of power reserve. Limited to 25 pieces.
