To begin with, we know very little about the Audemars Piguet Bamboo but here is what we’ve found on this rather unusual and unknown timepiece. The first examples appeared in the early 1980s, the production seemed to be pretty limited and didn’t last long in this decade.

Although we couldn’t find who was involved in its design process, one thing is certain, this watch is all about design and originality. Like its name suggests, its case, octagonal bezel and integrated bracelet mimic the forms made by bamboo sticks when they are tied together. This rather funky inspirational design makes the watch look more like a bracelet than a traditional timepiece.

We had the chance to touch and feel this rare watch and three things struck our minds. First the weight, this watch is heavy! All Bamboo watches were exclusive and expensive watches, even by AP standards, and so logically they are all - from the case to the bracelet - crafted in precious materials like white or yellow gold and sometimes paved with diamonds.

Secondly, the Bamboo is extremely thin! Adding up to the refined aspect of the piece, the thinness of the case is equivalent to the bracelet making it a seamless experience on the wrist. This thinness could be achieved thanks to in-house mechanical and quartz caliber.

Finally, the bracelet! First its quirky design and the large number of bracelet links makes it one of the most comfortable integrated bracelets we’ve ever worn.

Two sizes were proposed both intended for men and women and many different dial combinations are available. Some extremely rare examples are also offered, such as complications like full calendar with moonphases.

The Bamboo is one of the most original watches out there. Refined, rare, and completely unique in terms of design, ultra-thin, relatively affordable… In other terms this Bamboo packs up all the flare of the 1980s.
