In 1925 In the midst of the Art Deco movement Jaeger-LeCoultre unveiled the Duoplan, an impressively small watch intended for women. It was a success as it blurred the frontier between watchmaking and jewelry and confirmed the technical abilities of the swiss brand.

Capitalizing on this success, Jaeger-LeCoultre wanted to flirt with the mechanical and physical limits of movement construction and launched the calibre 101 in 1929. Fast forward 90 years and the calibre 101 is still the smallest mechanical movement ever conceptualized. What a feat!

The 101 is so small it’s sometimes hard to realize how it can compare to other watch movements. The easiest way is to compare it to something different, a match being the best match (see picture).Jaeger-LeCoultre also played with a Reverso to emphasize how small the caliber is (see picture). Yes, it’s small but it’s also rare! Since 1929 just over 2000 Calibre 101 movements were made. These calibers as they are mainly used in exceptional and exclusive jewelry timepieces.
FUN FACT: Queen Elizabeth II worn the watch at her coronation in 1953.
