The Quirky Backstory Of The Trilobe Watches

Trilobe is among the youngest brands we’ve ever mentioned on Watches and Culture, having made its public debut in 2018. Founded by Gautier Massonneau in France, Trilobe set out to create a new way of displaying time — offering an original reading experience within a subtle and elegant design.

Each rotating disc represents either the hours, minutes, or seconds. To read the time on the “Les Matinaux”collection, the small Trilobe logos act as indicators, each pointing to the reference marker on its respective disc.

These broadly original mechanical timepieces are powered by a micro-rotor caliber made especially for Trilobe, named X-Centric, developed in collaboration with Mojon and Le Cercle des Horlogers.

With its sleek aesthetic, combining black-polished and matte surfaces, the movement achieves a refined visual balance while remaining strikingly original — a perfect mirror of Trilobe’s overall concept.

At Watches and Wonders 2022, Trilobe introduced a bold new piece: “Une Folle Journée.” With this model, the brand took its signature concept to another level — quite literally, as the discs now appear to be suspended in mid-air.

Each disc is fixed to a column attached to a wheel beneath, creating an architectural display. Like the case, these elements are all crafted from titanium to keep the structure as light as possible and preserve the watch’s power reserve.

This construction offers a true three-dimensional view of the mechanism, enhanced by an impressively curved 10.2 mm sapphire crystal, adding depth and drama to the visual experience.

The rings move anticlockwise, and to read the time, one must locate the small red arrow at the base of the dial — its base indicates the hours, while its tip points to the minutes.

Trilobe is clearly on a roll, and we can’t wait to see how the brand will reinterpret its creative concept at the next edition of Watches and Wonders.
