While all Black Bay watches reference early Tudor dive watches, the Black Bay 54 is, aesthetically speaking, the one closest to the very first of these divers: reference 7922. A 37mm case retains the classic proportions of the original but with an increased depth rating of 200 metres and, inside, the technical prowess of the MT5400 in-house calibre. Built for robustness and precision, the movement’s variable inertia balance wheel is maintained by a sturdy traversing bridge with a two-point anchoring. This system, along with a non-magnetic silicon balance spring, enables Calibre MT5400, which is COSC-certified, to function within a tolerance range of 6 seconds (-2/+4) a day. Power reserve is 70 hours. True to the original design, there are no graduated hash marks on the unidirectional bezel. And these aesthetic details go beyond the case dimensions and bezel. For example, the luminous seconds hand has the look of the original, with its lollipop design. Ergonomics have evolved too, with a redesigned crown and bezel in proportions that still respect the spirit of that first dive watch.
