At Rolex, the Day-Date is the ultimate status watch. Part of the Oyster Perpetual collection, named after the watertight Oyster case patented in 1926 and the self-winding movement with Perpetual rotor patented in 1931, it exclusively comprises models in precious metals: gold or platinum. The first model, launched in 1956, was adopted by a number of influential personalities, which earned it the nickname “the Presidents’ watch”. The Day-Date owes this success essentially to a technical feat that was a world first at the time: its day of the week display.
The Oyster Perpetual Day-Date was the first wristwatch to indicate the days of the week written out in full – with a choice of many languages – in an arc-shaped window at 12 o’clock. Right from the time of its launch, the associated date was optimally legible thanks to a Cyclops lens. It was fitted with a sophisticated and specifically developed bracelet which made it instantly recognisable. Auspiciously named President, it comprises a staggered succession of semi-circular links.
Redesigned in 2008, this prestigious watch was interpreted in 36mm and 41mm sizes as the Day-Date II. Come 2015, the choice was between a Day-Date 36 and a Day-Date 40 housing a state-of-the-art movement with the new Chronergy escapement. This Calibre 3255 naturally earned Superlative Chronometer certification based on the high-quality diagnostic procedure instated by Rolex in the late 1950s and which evolves in step with technological advancements. On this occasion, the brand with the coronet logo introduced a few new aesthetic features: slimmer lugs and caseband; purer, faceted applied Roman numerals; special laser-decorated dial options; as well as an extremely comfortable President bracelet. The latter is even more seamlessly integrated with the case and features an especially refined invisible Crownclasp with an exceptional flowing feel thanks to ceramic inlays inside the links.
A 36mm or 40mm diameter; a domed or gem-set fluted bezel; a choice of 26 languages for the day of the week display: even with its precious, urban identity, the Oyster Perpetual Day-Date remains water-resistant to 100 metres – as befits its Oyster name.
