In the early 20th century, as wristwatches were becoming increasingly popular, Baume & Mercier was among the first brands to distinguish itself in the creation of ‘form’ models – the name given to watches with non-round cases. Design became firmly embedded in the brand’s DNA from the 1920s onwards and the range of production is such that the in-house Design Studio draws most of its inspiration from the Baume & Mercier Museum collection. Designers generally follow the rules of Phi, the symbol of the golden ratio, associated with Baume & Mercier since 1964. The quest for equilibrium or ‘divine proportion’ - embodied in the Greek letter Phi in homage to Phidias, the sculptor responsible for the decoration of the Parthenon -, applies particularly well to the rectangular case of the Hampton.
Launched in 1994, the collection is named after the Hamptons on New York’s Long Island. The resort’s easy living lifestyle and discreet elegance are reflected in these delightfully curvaceous watches for men and women. They were interpreted through various rectangular forms until the collection was revamped in 2011, when Baume & Mercier chose a 1940s Art Deco style as a model.
The composition of the contemporary Hampton case picks up the rectangle, the horizontal gadroons at 6 and 12 o’clock, and above all the domed crystal of the original, overhanging the caseband and featuring bare sides framing the watch. Depending on the model, these are accentuated by a straight line or, as in 1940, by a recessed hollow that adds a sensual touch, mostly on the women’s versions. As for the dial, the men’s models, and particularly the Hampton 10026 – which has been part of the catalogue since 2011 – reprise the historical small seconds display. Arabic instead of Roman numerals (except on particularly prestigious versions) and clearly contoured counters bring a distinctly modern feel.
Hampton, the ultimate Baume & Mercier ‘form’ watch, comes in a large variety of self-winding or quartz models, while incorporating some special nods to the Hamptons: red gold to evoke the warm light suffusing the area; barely contrasting two-tone dials that echo its gentle way of living; or jodhpur-shaped feminine straps for the women’s models in a nod to the Hampton Classic Horse Show. Baume & Mercier returned to the collection in 2020 with new executions in three sizes. Dials feature Arabic numerals swept by sword-shaped hands, with quartz movements for the women’s models and mechanical self-winding movements for the men’s versions. These include a dual-time model with day/night indication and a large date display, powered by a Soprod TT651 calibre. Introduced two years later, in 2022, the Hampton Hommage à Pierre Soulages references an Outrenoir painting by the artist, who passed away that year at the age of one hundred and two.
