The Solaria Ultra Grand Complication is the most complicated wristwatch ever made, totalling 41 functions plus a tourbillon regulator. The movement is constructed so that the timekeeping, calendar, chronograph and chiming functions are positioned on the mainplate while the astronomical complications form an additional mechanism. Consequently, the innovations inherent to this double-sided unique piece were driven by the imperative of miniaturisation, in order to contain the 1,521 movement components in a case that measures 45mm in diameter and just 14.99mm high. The Solaria Ultra Grand Complication, which chimes a Westminster carillon on four gongs, is one of the few timepieces to simultaneously display civil time with central hours and minutes, solar time including the equation of time, and sidereal time, which is relative to the stars. It also includes rare astronomical complications that display, in real time, the position, height, culmination and declination of the sun in addition to a world-first function that calculates when a given constellation or star will appear in the observer’s field of vision.
