wristwatch with a water-resistant steel case that became a professional diver’s watch

Reliability, precision and water-resistance are the main characteristics of the Seamaster, which debuted in 1948. In creating this collection, a future pillar of the brand, Omega’s watchmakers drew upon the experience accumulated during World War II with the watches delivered to the Royal Air Force. The latter required perfect water-tightness, 72 hours of immersion testing at different pressures and temperatures, high-precision adjustment and sturdiness. A new evolution of the Seamaster, introduced in 1957, affirmed a distinctively maritime vocation. Part of a trilogy of tool watches alongside the Speedmaster and the Railmaster, the Seamaster 300 was intended for divers as well as professionals working under water. Its reliability and robustness were bound to win over the British Royal Navy, which issued it to its members. The seahorse, inspired by the ornamentation on Venetian gondolas, became the symbol of the collection in 1958. The Seamaster soon proved its worth in extreme conditions. In 1968 two divers wearing a Seamaster 300 set a new depth record by descending to 365 metres. Just two years later, the diver and explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau chose the Seamaster 600 Ploprof for his diving experiments. In 1981 Jacques Mayol set a freediving record at a depth of 101 metres, descending into the abyss with a Seamaster 120 on his wrist. Since 1995 the Seamaster has outfitted James Bond for each of his appearances. While the Seamaster remains an essential reference in the diving world, the collection has undergone many changes over the years. Created in 1993, the Seamaster Professional 300 remains a classic among divers. Other interpretations have been added to the collection, such as the Planet Ocean, Aqua Terra, Diver, Bullhead or the Ploprof, which can incorporate a second time zone, a chronograph or a world time display. The helium valve, rotating bezel, luminescent indications, extensible metal bracelet, resistance to magnetism, impacts and scratches, as well as guaranteed water-resistance to a minimum of 300 metres (depending on the model) make the Seamaster a highly prized dive watch. Taking its iconic diver deeper still, Omega developed the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep in 2019 to accompany explorer Victor Vescovo on his mission to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, reaching 10,935 metres beneath the surface of the ocean. A version for the public was released in 2022 in a 45.5mm diameter, water-resistant to 6,000 metres and crafted from O-MEGASTEEL, a high-performance stainless steel alloy.
