Designed in 2000 by the former Artistic Director of Chanel, Jacques Helleu, the J12 heralded a new chapter in watch exteriors by attiring its sporty lines in black high-tech ceramic. As always at Chanel, it is rooted in the design language of Mademoiselle Chanel herself. Jacques Helleu thus gave a horological interpretation of Coco Chanel’s passion for black and white through what was an unusual material for the watch industry that has since been widely emulated. The first J12 appeared in a total-black version. Not only was black rarely used in watchmaking at the time, this combination of yttrium and zirconium dioxide powder, natural minerals, pigments and a bonding substrate featured undeniable qualities. Having endured firing at over 1000°C, ceramic is exceptionally resistant. Thermoneutral, it adjusts to skin temperature for an extremely comfortable feel.

Building on this initial success, Chanel once again honoured the eternally inspirational figure of Gabrielle Chanel, who liked to say that black and white create “perfect harmony”. The white ceramic J12 also proved a hit among watch enthusiasts. In parallel, Chanel continued to examine the possibilities of incorporating ceramic production into its G&F Châtelain manufacturing facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. This was a major undertaking, given the complexity of mastering the production processes. In 2006, six years after the launch of the first J12, the Chanel ceramic workshop was operational and opened up a vast range of opportunities. In 2011 the J12 lent its dynamic lines to a fresh innovation with the creation of titanium ceramic, which endowed its bracelet with a stormy sky colour that changes according to the light.

Ceramic remains the signature of this iconic model, which has been interpreted through a number of limited series and special aesthetic and technical variations. The J12 has been equipped with a flying tourbillon, a mysterious retrograde and a chronograph. The exterior has also undergone multiple transformations. Rubber, aluminium, diamonds and other precious stones, gold and leather have been paired with black, white or coloured ceramic in diameters suited to both larger and smaller wrists.

On the eve of its 20th anniversary, in 2019, the J12 underwent a complete refresh. Everything about the watch was changed but in ways which, individually, were barely perceptible. For example, the bezel is slimmer, with more notches. The font for the numerals and markers has been reworked, as have the hands and the central rail track. The crown is smaller. In all, some 70% of features were changed. One of the most notable transformations is the introduction of the Calibre 12.1 movement, developed for Chanel by Kenissi and COSC-certified. In 2021 it became the 12.2, fitted in 33mm sizes. When the J12 turned 20, Chanel celebrated with the X-Ray, equipped with the in-house Calibre 3.1 skeleton movement and crafted entirely from transparent sapphire for the case, bracelet, dial, plate, central minutes bridge and gear-train bridge: a world-first. This was followed, in 2022, by the equally exceptional J12 Tourbillon Diamant which houses Calibre 5; the first tourbillon movement from Chanel. In a technical tour de force, a diamond solitaire sits at the centre of the flying tourbillon cage, itself set with diamonds.
