Patek Philippe is presenting two limited-edition Calatrava models in 2017, both of which combine its feted extra-thin 240 automatic calibre with another of the firm's specialities: enamel miniature painting, used for the first time to depict azulejos. These painted and glazed ceramic tiles are typical of Portugal. Individual tiles are assembled, mosaic-like, into scenes that can cover an entire wall. Reproducing this art through enamel miniature painting, in this instance to portray fishing boats on the Tagus, opens up a new dimension for this age-old technique. The result is a trompe l'oeil so sophisticated it even imitates the texture of the tiles, as though the dial were actually composed of tiny azulejos.
