Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles Tweed Motif
Gabrielle Chanel was a familiar figure in the ateliers on Rue Cambon, and was never seen without the scissors she wore on a ribbon around her neck and the pincushion she kept strapped to her wrist. This latter tool piqued the imagination of Chanel’s creative director for a watch whose large (55mm) diameter offers fabulous scope for the couture house and watchmaker’s beloved métiers d’art. The Mademoiselle Privé Pique-Aiguilles is a collection of five tableaux: a lace motif strewn with camellias; a motif of quilted bags; pearl jewellery; an embroidery of diamond sequins and a tweed jacket. This latter shows the jacket being sewn and trimmed with 92 diamonds. The seamstress’s thimble, scissors and tape measure in sculpted gold bring to life this scene from a couture atelier. The contours of the black lacquer dial are set with 120 diamonds, with a further 211 diamonds adorning the yellow gold and titanium case.
