First launched in 2001, Opus is a standout series in the watchmaking world. With each new edition, the Harry Winston brand associates with an independent watchmaker to create an exceptional timepiece to which each of the partners contributes. The concept is based on extremely close cooperation, on an equal footing, and highlights the identity and creativity of both parties. This results in unique and consistently surprising works that could not have been achieved by only one of them. Audacity is an integral part of the deal.

Opus 3 caused a sensation mainly because of its radically non-conformist approach. Nothing like it had ever been seen before its presentation in 2003. Resulting from the collaborative endeavour between Harry Winston and Vianney Halter – whom Ronald Winston compared to a Jules Verne character or to Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince –, the creation went much further than its predecessors in terms of technical and aesthetic innovation, while achieving a remarkable blend of both.

Opus 3 was the first mechanical watch with an exclusively digital display. The blue upper lateral numerals indicate the hours, the black lower lateral numerals the minutes, and the central red numerals the date. As an added bonus, the countdown of the last four seconds – 56 to 59 – of each minute temporarily appears om the upper date aperture before each passage to the next minute. Bringing such a quantity of numerals that individually and instantly jump at the appointed time is a real feat. It takes ten superposed rotating disks to accommodate them within the available space This ‘computer’ is housed in an extremely complex case based on the “form follows function” principle enunciated by American architect Louis H. Sullivan. This 50-part ‘container’ with six portholes is reminiscent of historical marine chronometers, of Captain Nemo’s submarine, of the film sets in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, as well of 1950s sports cars. Everyone can choose their favourite comparison for a creation that perfectly integrates the three arches, a tell-tale sign of a Harry Winston watch and an allusion to the façade of the brand’s New York Salon.

Opus 3 was issued in a 55-piece limited edition: 25 in pink gold, 25 in platinum and five jewellery models in platinum set with round and baguette-cut diamonds totalling 4.44 carats. This series of remarkable timepieces, co-signed Harry Winston and an independent watchmaker, continued until 2015 and the presentation of the Opus 14 by Franck Orny and Johnny Girardin, founders of Télôs Watch.
