Heir to a long tradition of German watchmaking in Glashütte that began in 1845, Glashütte Original – a brand established in 1994 - proudly proclaims its origins. Not only are these clearly stated in its name; the words Glashütte i/SA (Glashütte in Saxony) are inscribed on its dials to distinguish it from the 19 other German cities with the same name. Four collections express the various facets of its art: the classically elegant Senator; Vintage with a 1960s and 1970s style; Ladies for a feminine touch; and Pano embodying a deliberately contemporary approach.
The key strength of the Pano collection is asymmetry. On the PanoReserve launched in 2002, the offset displays of the hours, minutes and small seconds frees up space for the large date and power-reserve indications. Clearly separated, these functions that prove extremely useful in daily life enjoy remarkable legibility. Their names spelled out in German – another nod to the brand’s birthplace – effectively confine them within an overall circle and thus avoid any potential hesitation as to their respective roles. Generally speaking, Glashütte Original applies the Golden Ratio (also known as the Divine Proportion) in its quest for aesthetic balance. The result is particularly satisfying on the redesigned PanoReserve, released in 2012. The slightly upsized case, from 39 to 40mm in diameter, and a slimmer bezel create a more generous dial opening and give a more spacious appearance, notably for the power reserve that no longer impinges on the chapter ring. While the hands and hour-markers have maintained their initial shapes, the respective function delimitations have been pared down to essentials, thereby heightening the sense of amplitude.
