Launched in 2001, the first Richard Mille watch was the RM 001. Instantly perceived as a disruptive and captivating proposition, this timepiece marked the beginning of what would become an incredibly successful story. But to truly understand this success, we need to step back and look at the foundations behind it — starting with the man himself. Richard Mille as a brand would not exist without Richard Mille the individual: a strong personality with bold ideas and a natural, almost instinctive marketing genius who embodies the brand at every level.

Next comes design. From the very beginning, Richard Mille adopted a radical approach. The RM 001 was famously conceived by carving a solid bar of hand soap — a true story. That initial gesture can still be felt today in the iconic tonneau-shaped case found across many of the brand’s creations. Combine this with futuristic case architecture, highly technical dials, and exposed movements, and it becomes clear why Richard Mille stands apart from the rest. Design here is not decoration; it is identity.

Finally, technical movements, high-tech materials, celebrity endorsement, and rarity complete the formula. Richard Mille was among the first brands of the 21st century to fully commit to tourbillons and complex movement constructions, while also pioneering the use of materials such as carbon composites, colored ceramics, and sapphire. At the same time, the brand mastered exclusivity and visibility through high-profile ambassadors like Jay-Z, Fernando Alonso, Pharrell Williams, Rafael Nadal, Sylvester Stallone, Drake, Ed Sheeran, and many others. Each model is produced in extremely limited numbers — only 17 RM 001 pieces were made.
FUN FACT:
Since 2010, Rafael Nadal has worn his Richard Mille on his right wrist even during competition. Weighing less than 30 grams and capable of withstanding forces of up to 12,000 Gs, his watch perfectly illustrates the brand’s obsession with performance.
