The Quirky Backstory Of The John Hamilton Ventura

This time, this watch has nothing to do with Switzerland. The Hamilton Ventura is a deeply interesting watch on many levels.

Launched in 1957, the Ventura introduced a completely new technology to the watchmaking world, battery powered wristwatches. Well before the rise of quartz watches, the Ventura was the first watch to bring a new type of energy source in the bowels of the wristwatch. In fact, the Ventura was powered by the Caliber 500, a construction combining the battery powered magnets and a traditional balance wheel, a fragile yet completely new way of powering a watch.

For such an invention, Hamilton had to come up with a daring design, so they asked famous car designer Richard Arbib to come up with an original design. Arbib sketched a futuristic, at that time, watch with an unorthodox case shape and funky looking lugs.

The Ventura was at first offered as a high-end watch and was initially only proposed in yellow or white gold cases.

In 1961, legend singer and actor Elvis Presley gave the final marketing punch that the Ventura deserved by bringing it to the big screen. In fact, Elvis was really into that timepiece as he owned different models of the watch and used to gift Ventura’s to friends.

The Ventura persisted on the big screen as it became the official watch in the MiB franchise from 1997 to this day.

The Ventura evolved through time and took different shapes, added complications and even accepted mechanical movements. The collection is still a big hit for Hamilton and is still available with a wide variety of propositions.

FUN FACT:
The original Ventura was around for less than 10 years before it was discontinued in 1988.
