In creating the AMC, Urwerk looked to the sympathique clock, invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795. Breguet's system combines a master clock, showing the reference time, which at midnight mechanically sets a corresponding pocket watch. Fast-forward to Urwerk, whose master clock goes by the name of Atomolith and is atomic. Using ions of rubidium, its precision far and away exceeds that of a quartz oscillator as it deviates by a maximum of one second in 317 years, compared with one to two seconds a day. This is the first time a watch brand has used an atomic clock to wind, set and adjust the rate of a mechanical wristwatch. Atomolith will even improve the AMC's precision. As Urwerk explains, when the watch is docked, the base unit activates a sensor mechanism inside it to detect the positive or negative deviation of the mechanical seconds indication from the hyper-accurate atomic clock. The requisite information is transmitted and corrections made via this ingenious mechanical solution.
