Defining himself as a watchmaker-constructor, François-Paul Journe specialised in restoring historical timepieces, creating one-of-a-kind models and developing movements, before his 1999 Geneva launch of the F.P. Journe – Invenit et Fecit (invented and made) brand. Determined to follow the trail blazed by the masters of the 18th century, which he regards as the golden age of time measurement, he chose to guarantee the authenticity and originality of his creations – in terms of both design and production – by means of a Latin label formerly used in France by the Royal Academy of Sciences.
At its launch in 2001, the Octa collection stirred interest among connoisseurs thanks to the ingenious movement construction – including the possibility of integrating various complications without modifying the volume of the calibre – as well as a 120-hour (five-day) power reserve; a first for a self-winding wristwatch at the time. Since 2004, the movements, which are systematically revealed through the caseback, are further highlighted by the use of pink gold.
The star model in the collection – unsurprisingly the Octa Réserve – underwent an evolution in 2007. While the functions remained identical – the power reserve clearly indicated by a retrograde hand, along with the hours, minutes, small seconds and large date –, the dial configuration was changed, with the hours and minutes switching from an offset right-hand position to a central display. The new face featured the brand’s typical ‘drop-shaped’ hands and Arabic numerals, the latter showing a subtle change of size. This evolution, which provided the enhanced legibility requested by customers, was matched by a bid to perfect the movement, particularly the automatic winding. François-Paul Journe had observed that winding was not fully effective when the watch was worn by relatively inactive people, such as those working on computers. Thanks to the latest-generation 1300-3 calibre, every single wrist movement, however slight, is harnessed.
Housed in a platinum or red gold case, as is the custom at F.P. Journe – Invenit et Fecit, the Octa Automatique Réserve was produced between 2007 and 2018, with the silver dial with a central Clous de Paris hobnail pattern that was introduced in 2007 and, since 2014, as a gold version. The Octa collection comprises models with additional complications such as moon phases, dual-time indication and a perpetual calendar, as well as jewellery pieces and boutique-exclusive creations.
